“You complete me…”
We all know the second-most favorite line from the 1996 rom-com Jerry Macguire.
This is a common thought in discussions of relationships. Two people join together to make a unified whole. With couples, this typically signifies certain areas where each person compromises. Merriam-Webster defines the verb compromise as “to come to agreement by mutual concession.”
Both people give something up. There are times when each person’s wishes are not fulfilled. Why? Because they are still individuals, governed (at least to some extent) by their own individual wants and desires. Through compromise, each person loses something that was, for a time at least, important to them.
When we grow in our relationship with the Lord, it’s different. As we grow in Christ, we lose NOTHING. He enhances our lives in ways we may not have ever considered.
Naysayers would argue we give up the ways of the world. Yes. We “give up” the sins of the flesh. That is so true. And even though as believers, we are no longer shackled by sin, we still struggle with worldly sin as ever single human does.
What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?
Mark 8:36
Without the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we are lost. As our relationship with Him grows, we become more and more unified. We don’t lose anything, we become enhanced versions of ourselves.
When you think about it, the Bible is the best self-help book ever written. As I dig into the word, learn to emulate Jesus, and grow in my relationship with the Him, I realize I am becoming the absolute best version of myself. Which has zero to do with me (other than putting my trust and faith in Him) but has everything to do with the Lord.
Jesus, you complete me!
