Your Dirty Little Secret

What’s yours? We’ve all got one….and if we’re honest, we’d have to admit we all have more than one. Probably many more…

Maybe it’s the way you sometimes react to the behavior of other people. It could be the crushing weight of debt you carry. Or the workplace gossip that blackens your heart.

We all have them. Those deep, dark secrets that we would never admit in good company. Yet we seldom confess those behaviors publicly or privately.

But guess what?

He already knows…

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the one to whom we are accountable.

Hebrews 4:13 (NLT)

Well, that cuts deep now, doesn’t it…

(Which is ironic if you go back and read verse 12…OUCH!!!)

The truth is…we can’t hide anything from God. Even in the deepest, darkest corners of our hearts and soul.

So why do we try?

God knows we are imperfect sinners, which is why He sent His Son to serve as our salvation. He doesn’t want us to sin, but He expects it.

Do you know what else He expects?

Honesty and humility.

“Everything is NAKED AND EXPOSED…”

Like Adam and Eve after the fall…filled with shame.

Our Lord is gracious and forgiving. But we have to come to him honestly, with those deepest, darkest secrets, and confess our sins. Speak them out loud. Name them. And with a humble heart, profess your desire to do better.

I was listening to a podcast recently and the guest was talking about how closely prayer and humility are tied to one another throughout the Bible. The conversation turned to those who were not comfortable extemporaneous prayer – they feel they aren’t “good” at it. The guest pointed out that all that matters is the heart of the one praying.

In God’s eyes, which do you think is better:

  • Someone with a pure heart confessing honestly and asking for the Lord’s guidance to overcome their sin, but who stumbles and stutters through their words; or,
  • Someone who knows all the right words and can speak with what appears to be power and authority but is praying simply for the appearance of the act of praying rather than for spiritual guidance.

Remember, “nothing in all creation is hidden from God.”

In many ways, this reality should provide a sense of calm and freedom. There is nothing you can say that will shock or surprise Him. More than that, He is waiting for you to come to Him with your problems. He is longing for you to confess your sins to Him. He wants to grant you the peace and joy that comes with forgiveness.

He already knows your sins. So what are you afraid of?
